The Sunshine State’s solar energy industry is growing. You can say it is even booming!

A recent report by The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing solar energy, showed that the state of Florida added 1,843 solar jobs in 2019, making it the largest increase in jobs among U.S. states. Other top states that added solar jobs included: Georgia (1,102 jobs), Utah (1,062 jobs) , and New York (1,011).

No other states added even new solar 1,000 jobs.

How Impressive are the Numbers

With the expansion, Florida ranks second in the nation for solar jobs only trailing California. This despite the state’s 3.4 percent decrease. California employs 74,255 workers in the solar industry compared to the Sunshine State’s 12,202.

Nationwide, the solar industry has added more than 5,600 jobs over last year. In 2019, the U.S. had approximately 49,983 solar workers. The study defined workers as those who spend 50 percent or more of their time on solar-related work. Over the last decade, the industry added 156,000 solar jobs, a 167% increase.

Tampa is playing a large part in expanding the state’s solar industry. As of this blog, Tampa Electric announced it would invest over $800 million to expand its solar energy capabilities (We blogged about this). When the project is complete, TECO will have 1,250 megawatts of solar energy.
