Net 0 Energy is keeping a close eye on happenings that are coming by the end of the year 2020. Florida Power & Light will be able to power about 15,000 homes in St. Johns County (Saint Augustine) using solar energy by this time.
The company recently provided an update on its solar project off of State Road 207 called FPL Trailside Solar Energy Center.
The project is on target to begin operation by December 31st, according to an email from the FPL communications department. The solar energy center will generate 74.5 megawatts of energy.
FP&L’s Larger Plan
What FPL is doing here is just part of its larger plan, which is calls ’30-by-30′. Their goal is to install 30 million solar panels by 2030.
“We continue to build an even more resilient and sustainable energy future for Florida while keeping reliability high and bills among the lowest in America,” the FPL email said. “To do this, we plan to keep building solar energy centers across the state while dramatically expanding innovative energy storage technology.”
The St. Johns County site will also support FPL SolarTogether, the company’s community solar program. It was launched earlier this year, and the company says it is the largest solar program of its kind in the United States. It allows customers to get the benefits of solar power without having to buy and install the solar panels on their own property.
“As a response to increased customer demand for alternative ways to receive the financial and environmental benefits of solar generation — leading to a reduced carbon footprint and lower energy bills — FPL SolarTogether removes traditional barriers such as large upfront costs, no long-term commitment, no penalty for leaving and the program can move with you,” the company says.
Customers interested in the program can visit FPL.com/SolarTogether and use the Bill Estimator tool to see how participating in the program can lower their energy bill over time. Calculations use an average 1,000-kWh residential monthly bill and actual savings are subject to change based on a customer’s usage and subscription level.
Enrollment is set to open later this month.
According to FPL, declining solar technology prices made large-scale solar investment in Florida economical in 2016, at which time FPL began developing new solar energy centers. Since then, FPL has 28 universal solar energy centers with 14 more under construction.
